EMIR — Visual identity and artworks for Norwegian Grammy Award-winning artist using contemporary blackletter.


Design and art direction for Norwegian Grammy Award winning artist EMIR. This was a collaboration between Sony Music Norway and myself as an independent designer. We created a visual identity, artworks, posters and merch with singles leading up to the launch of EMIR's album, "Det Lille Ingenting.” Each of the four artworks were tied to an accent color that informed posters and merch.
We leaned into contemporary blackletter typography and used Sharp Type's Respira Black in a combination with minimalistic Helvetica Neue to strike a comfortable balance. We found it interesting to use an all-lowercase approach since you'd normally see blackletter sentence cased or capitalized. This way we added a slightly more human feel to a typeface category that typically has a more aggressive tone.
